***** SAVE THE GREAT NORTHERN HOTEL ******

“..it was the 1850 opening of the Great Northern Railway's main line from London to York, that transformed Peterborough from a market town to an industrial centre.” - Wikipedia

By now most people will have read or heard the articles in the media, reporting the fact that the Great Northern Hotel faces the threat of being demolished?

Why? Well basically, a Q.U.A.N.G.O, called Opportunity Peterborough, decided that the plans for developing the area around the railway station (a.k.a the Station Quarter) could not be achieved unless they removed the Great Northern Hotel.

In response, Peterborough Liberal Democrats, asked a qualified architect to show that the Great Northern Hotel did not need to be demolished.

In stark contrast, the City Council, seems to have given Opportunity Peterborough carte blanche?

Anyhow, the Peterborough Liberal Democrats have promised to support Peter Boizot, who has promised to fight the threat of closure and with your help we hope to.

Already, those who have added their weight to the petition include City Councillors from other political parties, local business people, radio presenters, journalists, the Peterborough Civic Society and even a Lord!

“A major opportunity would be lost if Peterborough did not create an important civic space fronting the station so both citizens and visitors are able to move freely towards the city centre and bus station/parking facilities.

“This would address the current poor image Peterborough gives to new arrivals. The repositioned station can allow all this to happen without demolishing The Great Northern Hotel.” - Peter Boizot MBE

"The Great Northern Hotel is part of Peterborough's heritage as a railway town. There is no way anyone can come along with a ball and chain and destroy the hotel.." - Stewart Jackson MP (Evening Telegraph, "Boizot vows to save Great Northern", 08/01/08)

"We all want to see Peterborough City Centre improved and modernised but it needs to be done sensibly and making sure that important and popular features are retained. We don’t want a city centre clogged up with cars and lorries, nor do we want one, which is designed primarily to maximise benefits for property developers.” - Cllr Nick Sandford, Liberal Democrat Group Leader on the City Council (13/01/08)
